Professional Services for a Video Projection on the Exterior Façade of Place Bell in Downtown Laval
To support and showcase digital creativity through a large-scale, innovative project leveraging Québec’s expertise in the digital creative sector, the City of Laval invited a professional artist to create a digital artwork specifically designed for free outdoor presentation on the expansive exterior façade of Place Bell, a public space accessible to all in the heart of downtown Laval.
As a major cultural hub with a prime downtown location, Place Bell provides a highly visible setting for the artwork. Overlooking Claude-Gagné Street, the installation transforms the surrounding urban landscape and brings digital art directly into the public realm.
The City of Laval sought the services of an experienced multimedia project firm to provide a turnkey solution for the implementation of a video projection featuring a digital artwork on the exterior façade of Place Bell.
Creos was commissioned to implement the video projection and oversee the technical delivery of the project. More specifically, the scope of work included, but was not limited to:
- Developing a detailed project schedule;
- Defining, supplying, and deploying the required materials, machinery, equipment, and projectors;
- Defining and implementing the required electrical infrastructure;
- Determining and mobilizing the required technical resources and workforce;
- Coordinating the rental of all necessary machinery and equipment;
- Procuring the required materials;
- Completing the full installation of all required equipment and carrying out related tasks in coordination with City of Laval and Place Bell stakeholders;
- Operating the video projection and ensuring its proper functioning, continuity, and maintenance throughout the presentation period;
- Dismantling the installations and equipment in coordination with City of Laval and Place Bell stakeholders once the presentation period was completed; and
- Restoring the site to its original condition, excluding any repairs to the roof membrane, which were required to be performed by the sole contractor authorized to work on the building’s roof.
The work also included all supplementary services, studies, and verifications required to complete the mandate, whether or not explicitly listed above, as well as the use of appropriate and safe equipment in sufficient quantities, in accordance with industry best practices.
Key Project Components
Scenographic and Technology Design: Optimization of an 80 ft × 29.85 ft projection surface. Selection of high-performance equipment, including two converged Barco UDX 32K 4K projectors, climate-controlled enclosures, and a Resolume Arena 7 media server with 5G connectivity.
Infrastructure and Logistics: Planning of a new rooftop electrical supply, including a 600 V to 120/208 V transformer and a temporary 60 A electrical panel; crane-assisted installation using a 25-ton boom truck; perimeter safety measures; and load assessment of approximately 1,000 lb.
Budget Management: Development of a comprehensive project estimate of $81,626.60, covering machinery rental, technical labour, signage, and professional fees.
Creative Specifications: Definition of technical content requirements for visual artists, including a 2.68:1 aspect ratio, 3840 × 1432 resolution, DXV3 codec, and a maximum three-minute loop.
